Used in Portuguese knitting, these pins are an aid for controlling tension. What is Portuguese Knitting? It is a unique knitting style brought to Portugal through their trade with the Persian world, where knitting had been invented around 700 BC.
In Portuguese Knitting, holding the needles is the same as for English or Continental knitting. The difference is that you tension the yarn around your neck or via one of these knitting pins which have been attached to your garment on your left shoulder. In this way, your working yarn comes from the front of your work.
What is the advantage of Portuguese Knitting? Apart from aiding even yarn tension, it's a fast and easy way to work with colours or stranded knitting. It's believed to be a good choice for people with joint pain and arthritis (as there is less movement of the hands). Also, knitting in the Portuguese style is supposed to be a great option for blind or visually impaired people, since the working yarn stays in place, and is easily found.
A great way to make the most of the Portuguese style of knitting is to keep your yarn on a free-moving yarn dispenser - take a look at this one here. I've found a great video explaining the technique on YouTube, which you can watch here. These two pins come in a gold finish, presented in a clear cellophane bag.
Each pin measures approximately 3.5cm x 2.5cm Made in the USA.
